One of the biggest transitions in anyone’s life is moving out of their home. If you’re moving out, you probably feel mixed emotions of sadness, stress, and frustration. Believe it or not, moving ranks among the highest stressful situations in life along with loss of a job, death of a loved one, divorce, and major illness. Moving disrupts your daily routine. If only you could snap your fingers and the moving is complete. Not all of us have the luxury of hiring people to pack and move for us. So, what can we do to reduce the stress of moving?
Your home is almost like another family member. It has witnessed some of the most intimate and personal moments in your life. A new house has unfamiliar smells, different sounds, and a completely different feel. You begin to miss that one squeaky floorboard in your old home, the whine of the powder room door swinging on its hinges. Your former home and neighborhood kept you balanced, and now you feel out of place.
Overwhelming is the big word when it comes to moving. Whether you’re upsizing or downsizing, moving to the city or the country, going across the country or right down the street, planning is crucial. Utilize these tips for a smoother move.
Plan in advance! Make your reservations for movers two to four weeks before your moving date. Get estimates and hire the movers and schedule a rental truck. Pack a box of essential items that you will need immediately after the move and make sure it’s the last thing added to the truck. Consider packing bathroom essentials like toilet paper, shampoo and soap, toothpaste/toothbrush, etc. Pack changes of clothes, a first aid kit, and medications. You may also need bedding. Have snacks and bottles of water on hand for move day. Cancel cable, newspapers, and lawn services about a week before the move.
Start packing items you won’t need ahead of time. Clearly label all boxes on the side. Avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box. When you pack, never use duct tape. Use packing tape. While strong boxes and packing materials are important for the move, the right kind of tape is keeping your boxes closed. Choosing the wrong tape can result in broken items and lost time. Also make sure to tape the boxes rather than interlocking the tops. Another tip I have heard multiple times is to use only small boxes for books. They become heavy extremely quickly! Pack important and sentimental documents separately to be easily accessible: passports, health records, photo albums, insurance information, etc.
I’m a big yard sale nut, so I think yard sales are a great way to get rid of items you won’t need for the move. Having a yard sale will earn you some extra cash. The less stuff you have to load on the moving truck, the lighter the truckload, the cheaper your move will be! Several weeks (five or six) before moving, sort items to keep, donate discard, or sell. Start using up food and cleaning supplies. Schedule cleaning services for your current home like carpet cleaning. Recruit your friends and family to help unpack at your new home. The more the merrier and extra hands never hurt.
Get the boxes and tape ready! Withdraw cash to tip the movers and make sure you have enough cash, checks, or a credit card to pay for unexpected expenses. Think of your move as a new chapter of your life beginning. It’s not just a chapter ending. There are countless blessings coming your way. Perhaps you may be starting your dream job, you’re moving closer to family, or you’re moving to a big, exciting city. While the initial excitement quickly wears off after packing the sixteenth box, the move will most likely be worth it in the end. Get your supplies ready and shake off that moving stress.
